Studying cities of the Comoros shows evidence of the basic contradiction that they are both quite similar to small towns - in so far as society there is stamped by people knowing each other – and, because of their economic and political status, to large African cities open to the outside world and to some modernity. The interest in the towns from the Comoros and in the evolution they are submitted to, originates in this combination of the characteristics of small towns and large cities. These changes are all the more noticeable as urbanization in the archipelago has dramatically increased for the last forty years, which results in the coming out of built-up areas where there used to be isolated localities.
