Sr2Co2O5 has two structural varieties according to the electronic configuration of trivalent cobalt ; the brownmillerite-type phase from the perovskite one (high temperature form) and the low temperature phase containing oxygen vacancies derived from the hexagonal perovskite 2H structural type. Their structures have been refined. The only brownmillerite - type material was successfully electrochemically oxidized in alkaline media. The SrCo4+O3 oxide having the cubic perovskite structure has been obtained.
