Soft soil improvement by vertical rigid piles is a technique which associates a pile grid and a granular earth platform, intercalated between the improved soil and the surface structure. Arching occurs in the granular fill, which permits partial load transfer onto the piles, thesurface settlement reduction and homogenization, in order to insure the structure good working and durability. The reinforcement can be completed by a geosynthetic, laid at the platform base, working in membrane effect. The main application areas are road- and railway embankment foundations and industrial area foundations.
