The work presented here deals with the role of wild birds in West Nile (WN) virus epidemiology in the Camargue. Bird species likely to be involved in the various steps of WN virus circulation (introduction, amplification, spread, emergence) are identified using bibliographic data on WN disease and ornithological criteria. Epidemiological investigations focused on some of these species during the years 2004 (epizootic year) and 2005 (post-epizootic year) show that WN virus is circulating in the Camargue bird population. Dates and locations of these contacts are unknown for migrating birds arriving from Africa in spring.
