This work deals with free radical grafting of methyl methacrylate onto a poly(ehtylene-co-1-octene), through reactive processing. The chemical mechanisms involved in grafting reaction at high temperature and high viscosity have to be understood to control graft copolymers architecture. A model compound approach enabled to clarify and quantify several points such as grafting sites, reactions governing grafts molecular weights and side reactions leading to homopolymer. Thanks to a numerical simulation, this approach shows the deleterious influence of temperature on grafting reactions.
