The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of fluorinated carbon materials has shown that the nature of C-F bonding as well as their relative amounts are dependent on the nature of the host carbon materials (carbon fibers, pyrocarbon, exfoliated graphite or carbon blacks), the heattreated treatments which increase the degree of graphitisation, the type of fluorination treatments (gaseous or plasma procedure) and the fluorination conditions. Various techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy have allowed to correlate the structure of carbon materials and their reactivity under active fluorinated species (F2 or F°). Moreover, the fluorination...
