This study deals with the behaviour of a pad on disc rubbing contact under severe braking loadings. Those conditions are observed in railway application during an emergency stop braking or a succession of stop brakings with heat accumulation. The chosen multiphysical approach takes account of the interactions between tribology, heat science and physical chemistry. The work is presented in 4 parts.The first presents the characterization of the studied materials (an organic matrix composite and a grey cast iron) and the experimental devices used.
