The kinetics of the Ti(IV)/Ti(III) couple in acid media was investigated. Experiments in square wave voltammetry performed at the mercury electrode with forward and reverse scans show a sequence of electrochemical reactions which occur in succession or even simultaneously. Complexes formed with HSO4- or C2O42- ligands react more rapidly than hydroxylated forms of titanyl ion. The experimental results were modelled and interpreted on the basis of CE and triangular reaction schemes where two Ti(IV) species bound by a slow chemical reaction reduce to Ti(III).
