The Researches into the Mathematical Principles of the Theory of Wealth, published by Antoine-Augustin Cournot (1801-1877) in 1838 is usually viewed as providing seminal insights towards modern economics: this book especially exerted a great influence over marginalist economists by the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, Cournot's work cannot be properly understood if not put back in the context of classical political economy and read through the lens of his own time.
