We study experimentally and theoretically the separation and rupture mechanisms encountered when a material confined between two parallel plates is put under traction (probe-tack test). This study is conducted on two model systems, chosen for their viscoelastic liquid behaviour: A highly viscous silicone oil and mixtures of a less viscous silicone oil with silica-based nano-particles in various proportions. The study conducted on the first system shows that, in addition to fingering and cavitation which have been observed with Newtonian liquids, cracks can appear at the material-plate interface.
