The aim of this experimental study is to characterise the step structure on a vicinal surface of an ordered alloy (L12) Cu-17%-Pd(1,1,11). This alloy present a chemical order-disorder transition at Tc=778K (Tc) (1sr order). At room temperature, we have observed by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) that the equilibrium surface morphology exhibits a regular distribution of paired steps. We have shown, by helium diffraction (TEAS), that this morphology evolves continuously to an unpaired steps structure close to Tc. By using in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction at ESRF, the unpairing process was found to be linear with surface in plane component of the chemical order parameter.
