The cultivated species Vanilla planifolia G. Jackson is a typical example of a vegetatively propagated crop introduced from its area of origin (America) to new regions where natural pollinators are absent. In these conditions how can be explained the phenotypic variations observed among Vanilla cultivars in introduction areas such as Reunion Island (Indian Ocean)? These could be the result of different introduction events, somatic mutations, sexual reproduction (through manual pollination), polyploidy or epigenetics phenomena. AFLP markers were used to elucidate the patterns of introduction of V. planifolia and showed that most of the accessions cultivated today in the islands of the Indian Ocean derive from a single introduced genotype.
