The aim of this work is to study the effects of confinement on the properties of a thermotropic liquid crystal (8CB). The use of the columnar form of porous silicon and porous alumina membranes allows introducing a confinement along one preferred direction. We have shown by electronic microscopy that theses two porous materials present a quasi 1D organization of nanopores (mean diameter about 30 nm, length 30 μm). Moreover, porous silicon displays an inner disordered morphology of the pores surface, which induces, quenched random fields on the confined system.The polymorphism and the phase diagram of the 8CB were studied by calorimetry (DSC), Raman scattering and by neutrons diffraction.
