This research confirms the hypothesis that morphological knowledge, like phonological knowledge, influences the ability of children to acquire reading ability. The series of experiments carried out through this study suggests that, even before learning to read, children develop a certain sensitivity for the different structures of oral language. These skills allow us to distinguish those who become better readers from those who will be less successful. The results of the first set of experiments show that strong readers in the first and second grades demonstrate greater phonological and morphological knowledge than those who have less reading ability. Better readers are more able to manipulate phonological units and exercise word structure ...
