The aim of my thesis project was to study the pneumococcal cell wall synthesis, which participates to the bacterial growth and division and involves the « Penicillin-Binding Proteins » (PBPs). I performed the localisation of the complete PBP family from the human pathogen S. pneumoniae during the cell cycle, which revealed unexpected similarities between the mechanism of cell division in bacilli and cocci. The identification of the specific role of each PBP enlightened the contribution of the D,D-carboxypeptidase PBP3 in the regulation of the bacterial division.
