About half of the 10500 t of antibiotics consumed per year in Europe are used in veterinary medicine. In fish farming, they are usually administered to fish directly in the water as medicated feed. The fate and effects of antibiotics, and particularly oxolinic acid (OA), umequine (FLU) and oxytetracycline (OTC), in the freshwater environment is causing increasing concern. The aim of this thesis is to study the fate of these antibiotics in the water, sediments and bryophytes of freshwater. The way to reach this goal was to develop original and reliable analytical methods in sediments and bryophytes which could then be used in experimental studies validated through field work.
