Our research analyses how the origins of humankind were taught in France during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and are now taught in 19 countries. The interactions between science and society, specifically between scientific knowledge, values and social practices are analyzed. Firstly, the scientists' conceptions are identified from an epistemological approach since Linnaeus in the eighteenth century to categorize the main epistemological obstacles on this theme. The analysis of the humankind's origin in science curricula and textbooks during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries allowed to argue that this teaching is not linked solely to the progress of knowledge but also to the social context.
