Ageing aircraft led to study the effects of corrosion on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys: from localized corrosion defect to mechanically active crack.We have characterized the sensitivity of AA2024-T351 to intergranular corrosion. A semi-elliptical 150-250 µm depth intergranular defect is formed after 7h exposure in 0.5 M NaCl. Then intergranular corrosion rate drops sharply.We studied the mechanisms of fatigue crack growth from these defects, and more precisely the transition from intergranular corrosion to transgranular short fatigue crack.
