This work was done within the field of experimentation on distributed systems, more specifically test and validation of such systems. Next to classical experimentation methods (modelisation, simulation, testbeds like PlanetLab or Grid'5000), methods based on emulation and virtualisation provide a promising alternative. They allow to execute the real application to study inside a synthetic environment, with caracteristics defined for the experiment.
