Research in the field of neuroprotection is a major concern in Neurosciences. Here, we studied the neurobiological effects of erythropoietin (Epo), which has been considered since a decade as one of the most promising neuroprotective ligands. Based on the expression analysis of Epo and its potential binding sites (EpoR receptor and common β chain « βc ») in the rat brain from early postnatal development to elderly, we invalidate the hypothesis that βc can compose such binding sites in brain tissue. Furthermore, we report that environmental stimuli such as hypoxia exposure and enriched housing enhance EpoR expression in vulnerable brain areas.
