This thesis present work on the phenomena of hardening precipitation in metallic materials, and in particular applications to aluminium alloys and steels, as well as welded structures of these materials, for structural applications in the domain of transports.The first part presents advances in the quantitative characterisation of precipitation at the nanoscale, particularly with the techniques of small-angle X-ray or neutron scattering. The use of large scale instruments to obtain in-situ measurements will be illustrated.The second part deals with the precipitation kinetics, both on the experimental and modelling point of view.
