We studied the relationship between crystallographic and magnetic properties in R-M-B intermetallic phases where R is a rare earth element, yttrium or thorium and M a 3d transition metal. The presence of boron in the transition metal atomic environment dramatically modifies the magnetic properties both at macroscopic and microscopic scales.Through this experimental work, we investigated the magnetic properties of YCo4B compound, the reference compound of the Rn+mCo3n+5mB2n family, and some RCo4-xFexB. The original magnetocrystalline anisotropy of YCo4B presents both a spin reorientation and a first order magnetisation process. It also presents a great sensitivity to an applied pressure.
