The Massaciuccoli palustrine marsh is amongst the most important wetlands in Tuscany. It is a coastal lagoon of fresh to brackish water, which drains a total basin area of about 112 km2 and opens to the sea by way of an artificial channel, known as Burlamacca.In the palustrine area there are old quarries (30 m max depth and 2.5 km2 total area) which have been left by the previous sand extraction activity. Sewage, wastewaters of reclamation lands and wastewaters of cattle-breeding and of a food-industry are the main polluting sources.
