The energy management issue in hybrid vehicles consists on determining a power split between different sources of energy in order to minimise the fuel consumption and/or pollutant emissions. This objective is achieved by designing a control strategy. Using a prior knowledge of vehicle driving cycle, the problem is formulated as an optimal control problem aiming to minimize fuel consumption under constraints. Global optimisation algorithms are then applied. The latter are limited to simulation; nevertheless, they allow designing real time control strategies.
