This dissertation addresses the problem of run-time adaptation of user interfaces (UI) for ubiquitous computing (Ubicomp). In Ubicomp, user-interfaces have to be plastic: they must be able to adapt, or to be adapted, to the context of use while preserving their usability. The goal of this thesis is to understand the problem of UI plasticity at runtime and to explore UI plasticity from the software engineering perspective. This study shows that plastic interactive systems are dynamically reconfigurable distributed software built from heterogeneous software entities.
