Living beings are characterized by their relationship with their environment. They can perceive, act and decide. Behavioral animation uses this architecture to model autonomous entities, similar to living beings, populating virtual environments. In this thesis, we propose an architecture to describe virtual humans behavior. First, we study the relationship between virtual humans and their environment through the navigation process. We propose a spatial subdivision algorithm extracting topological properties from the geometry of the environment. This information is used to create a hierarchical path-planning algorithm.
