Genetic expression is regulated by transcriptional factors. Among them, the Vitamin D receptor (VDR) belongs to the superfamily of nuclear receptors which adopt their active conformation upon ligand binding. The active form of Vitamin D, Calcitriol is the natural ligand of VDR and plays important roles in several biological functions such as calcium and phosphate homeostasis, inflammation, cell differentiation and proliferation and apoptosis. However, its intrinsic genomic actions are accompanied by hypercalemic non-genomic effects which limit the use of Calcitriol in therapeutic treatments.
