This PhD study aims at an epistemological, empirical and theoretical approach to the issues of nomadism and sedentarisation as paradigms of how geography deals with the Elsewhere. The central focus is on a renewed understanding of nomadism, which cannot be simply reduced to a static contrary of sedentariness by consigning the former to the realm of the special and the marginal. To this end two complementary investigations were undertaken. One of the long-forgotten fundamentals of discipline imagery, the chorological doctrine, is first highlighted as an obstacle to the emergence of anthropogeography.
