This thesis proposes to identify the effects of the French Higher Education Institutions assessment. Our research is centred on the self-assessment proposed by the National Evaluation Committee (CNE) in their guide “The Book of References” (2003). This thesis also contains a study, namely interviews with 37 persons in charge of 17 Higher Education Institution that followed the above-mentioned self-assessment, the estimated discourse on their self-assessment and institutional experience, the effects and their opinions on the procedure and the self-assessment guide.
