In the context of the Water Framework Directive, it is necessary to evaluate the impact of metal contamination on aquatic environments in order to establish a diagnosis of aquatic systems. Integrating bioavailability of metals in this diagnosis by measuring the bioaccumulation in model organisms allows assessing more accurately the risk to the environment. However the relationship between bioaccumulation and chemical contamination of the environment is not direct since it depends on physicochemical and physiological parameters.
