Due to their high abundance, common species form much of ecosystem biomass and service provision. Despite this, only few studies have been specifically dedicated to common plant species, partly due to a lack of data. Here we describe the variation in abundance of common plant species and investigate the mechanisms involved, in a highly human impacted area: the Parisian region. Data collection is a crucial step of all biodiversity studies; the first part of this thesis describes protocols that could be implemented to collect data at large scales, and discuss sampling bias and variability sources that can affect biodiversity inventory and monitoring.
