High density polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used in civil engineering applications due to its low cost, easy processability, barrier properties, good impermeability and chemical resistance. However, in external environment, several factors such as washing by rain water, ultraviolet radiations (UV) and seasonal temperature variations can cause chemical degradation of HDPE and lead to its embrittlement.
