Although Mars currently has no global dynamo-driven magnetic field, the existence of strong crustal fields due to remnant magnetization (Mars Global Surveyor) indicates that a global field existed in the past and that it disappeared 4 billion years ago. However, Lillis et al. (2006) have suggested a brief second Martian core activity episode, some hundred millions years after the first cessation. Understanding the conditions under which the magnetic field has disappeared as well as its possible reactivation have motivated my Ph.D. work. The presence of a magnetic field is related to the core activity and to the mantle heat circulation.
