Innovative solutions must be developed to make future power systems able to overcome a growing number of challenges. In particular, energy storage is thought to be the missing link that will help enable the massive integration of renewable sources in distribution grids. The present research work aims to investigate this new technical option, which has reached maturity and is currently attracting increasing attention.
