In this work a new simple and effective method, based on self-focusing beams which allows the photo-inscription of optical waveguides in the bulk of photorefractive materials, without applied field, is presented. This photo-inscription method uses the pyroelectric effect present in ferroelectric materials to yield a nonlinear focusing effect controlled by sample temperature change. Experimental demonstrations of pyroelectric beam trapping are realized in non intentionally doped lithium niobate crystals. Detailed studies led to spatial solitons formation called "pyrolitons".
