Robinson Crusoe is a modern literary myth for it elaborates in the beginning of the eighteenth century a new status of the subject: it builds up the mediating figure of an "I" which joins the social and the sacred disconnected by the disenchantment of the world. It functions as a myth proposing a narrative solution to an ideological dilemma. Appearing with the convergence of several themes of insular loneliness (observed since Sophocles' Philoctete) that Defoe's novel gathers for the first time, the Crusoe myth evolves in its versions of the second half of the XXth century.
