The Von Karman Sodium experiment displays a magnetic field generated by dynamo action in a fully turbulent flow of liquid sodium. The magnetic field can be either statistically stationary, oscillatory, or bistable between these two states. For other values of the control parameters, it displays random reversals similar to the ones observed in palaeomagnetic recordings. All these dynamical regimes result from the coupling between two magnetic modes. A simple kinematic dynamo model gives some insight on the spatial structure of the magnetic field, and makes the link between hemispherically localized dynamos (Mars' palaeomagnetic field) and randomly reversing fields (the geodynamo).
