Abstract

In this thesis we show how photonic crystal cavities can exploited for sensing application, provided that they are filled with a sensitive absorbent layer. A Lorentz dispersion model implemented in a 2D-FDTD code show that the absorption of the layer can be exploited for enhancing the sensitivity of the sensor. We found that a variation of the refractive index of 10¯⁷ leads to a variation of the transmittivity of 23 % at the resonance peak. Also, we will report the first study and realization of two types of lithium niobate photonic cavities (LiNbOз PhCs).
