When a material is irradiated with laser fluency close to its ablation threshold, periodic surface structures LIPSS (Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structure) appears on its surface. These structures are dependent of the polarization vector of incident electric field and their periods are close to the laser wavelength. They have been extensively studied for more than thirty years, and their origins are quite well understood. However, the recent use of ultra-short laser sources has renewed the subject.
