In polymer-based nanocomposites macroscopic properties are driven by one specific feature: the huge interfacial area developed by nanofillers, leading to a strong improvement in mechanical properties. Even though the molecular origins of this reinforcement are still not well understood, its amplitude appears to be strongly related to two main effects: a structural effect (dispersion state) and an interfacial effect (filler/matrix interactions).
