Their high efficiency and directivity make laser optical sources extremely harmful to the human eye. However there is a spectral bandwidth extending from 1.5 to 1.55 µm where the damage threshold of the eye is higher and where the risks are less important. This band width is said to be " eye-safe ". A solid state laser pumped by laser diode emitting in this spectral band should find many applications in the fields of obstacle detection and ranging. This work therefore aims to study theoretically and validate experimentally an eye-safe laser pumped by high-power laser diode using an erbium and ytterbium co-doped glass.
