Contact sensitizers are defined as reactive molecules (electrophilic) which have the ability to modify skin proteins to form an antigen (hapten). In addition to the haptenation mechanism, danger signals, leading to the activation of dendritic cells, are described to be crucial for the effective induction of an hapten-specific T cell immune response.
