Proteoglycans are complex macromolecules which consist structurally of a core protein and one or more covalently linked glycosaminoglycan chains. Both components can interact with a variety of binding proteins known to be involved in various pathophysiological processes such as inflammation and cancer. The characterization of the specific interactions between glycosaminoglycans and their binding partners should raise new therapeutic opportunities in drug development.
