In this work we studied protein adsorption on chemically well-controlled surfaces. The focus is put on linking physico-chemical properties of surfaces (hydrophobicity/charge) to the structural properties of the adsorbed proteins. To this end, alkyl thiols differing by their end group were used to build self-assembled monolayers on gold substrates (SAM) that serve as templates for protein adsorption or covalent grafting. SAM surfaces before and after protein adsorption were characterized with a combination of techniques.
