This critical presentation of the research and reflections undertaken since my 1996 thesis comes in two perspectives. The first is of a "relativistic" approach borrowed from Kuhn; it explains the epistemological and methodological development of the researcher. It is a personal statement claiming some subjectivity in social science research and language didactics. The second perspective traces the milestones of evolution that have made possible a better description of the concept of "competence" for language learning. Different fields of language didactics have been explored: the methodology of language teaching, the issue of multilingualism, the evaluation and certification for language learning, finally the impact of ICT in language teach...
