Spermatozoa production throughout life requires the presence of the initial germ cells, the spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). Their self-renewal and their ability to differentiate assure to keep a reserve and to produce continuously differentiated germ cell. In mammals, several markers of the SSCs have been identified. Interestingly, some of them allow us to sort the SSCs population and further to analyze their fate in vitro and in vivo. By contrast, only scarce information has been obtained in non-mammalian vertebrates including the teleost fishes.
