Brain functionning is gouverned by two master forces : excitation, mainly supported by glutamatergic transmission, and inhibition, mainly supported by GABAergic transmission. The mutual and balanced influence of these two forces is instrumental to establish and maintain a physiological neuronal activity, particulary in neuronal networks involving several interconnected brain area and neuron types.
