Colorectal cancer is one of the major causes of cancer-related deaths. We took advantage of Apc mutant mice that mimic the adenomatous polyps that affect humans with an inactivated Apc gene, to gain insight into the critical events that affect the development of colorectal cancer. We show that autophagy, a catabolic pathway involved in the degradation of intracellular proteins and organelles, is activated in intestinal murine and human cancer and its inhibition has a crucial role in controlling tumorigenesis.
