The explosive growth of Internet traffic driven by proliferation of broadband services necessitates for a paradigm change in transport network. Introducing flexibility into optical layer has been considered as a guiding direction for improving network cost and energy efficiency. The traditional fixed network paradigm is therefore migrating to flexible one where a number of transmission parameters could be tuned and adapted to various network conditions.
