The recently identified strains of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 belonging to Sequence Type (ST) 47 and pulsotype Lorraine are now responsible for an increasing number of Legionnaires’ disease (LD) cases mainly in the North of Europe. The major paradox is that ST47 strains are extremely rarely detected in environmental samples when investigations to identify the source of ST47 associated LD cases are undertaken.
